Prime numbers are numbers that have only 2 factors, the number itself and 1 i.e. they are only divisible by themselves and 1. Some examples are 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19, ... . The number 1 is a bit of an oddity however - though divisible by 1 and itself (which is 1 too), it is not included in the list of prime numbers. More from Dr James Grime below:
